Re: CD-i Null Modem Cables for Sale!! Free Gift Offer

The CD-i Null Modem Cables have been put up for sale... Hi, How much would postage cost to New Zealand for one of these cables plus freebie game? Thanks, - Ali P.S. You have a great choice of CD-i games, but what happened to the back catalogue of VCD titles? I'd be surprised if they were all sold, ...

Ah well! Deadlines are always difficult to meet! Besides, it's only another two weeks when we've been waiting donkey's years for an emulator!

Keep up the good work!

Hi, The Spectrum was based on a 3.5MHz Z80A. Even the original 8MHz Atari ST and original 7.8MHz Amigas couldn't emulate the Spectrum at full speed, so there seems little hope of a CD-i doing it... Much better to re-make the original games - keep the gameplay but remove the Spectrum's "colour clash"...

Hi,

Thanks for the info - I'd forgotten about OS-9's earlier heritage!

Interesting to note the use of floppies for screen grabs... Better than attempting to photograph a monitor or television, I guess!

CD-i floppy disk geometry/format and usage?

Hi, Can an ex-CD-i developer perhaps shed some light on what the floppy drive was used for on the authoring/development CD-i players? Also, does anyone have any information on the geometry/format (e.g. tracks, sectors per track, bytes per sector, filesystem) of a CD-RTOS formatted floppy disk? Regar...

Hi, @Overdrive_X: thanks for making the dev stuff available on your web site. This should help lots, once I've done the nice 26Mb download through my slooooow dial-up connection!!! @Devin: I still enjoy playing Chuckie Egg even now! I partially wrote a version of it in Java a year or two ago (was mi...

Aha, so I may well have some of the only CD-i players in New Zealand then! Quite odd how the Asian VCD market was (and still is if Singapore and Malaysia are anything to go by) the biggest in the world. Unfortunate that not all Asian VCDs have the CD-i player application present on the disc, but qui...

Here are mine (currently in storage as I've recently emigrated): Philips CD-i 605T/20 (tray, not caddy) authoring system 2 x Philips CD-i 210 (unsure of exact revisions, both use earlier shell) Philips CD-i 470 (again unsure of exact revision) I also have a HiSoft SMD-100, a small-ish black box that...

@Overdrive_X: That's great news! The more information about CD-i development people can get hold of, the better.

Longer term, it'd be great to see some homebrew CD-i stuff, perhaps from some former ST and Amiga programmers.

What will your toolkit contain, or do I have to wait and see?!

Hi, Thanks again for your informative reply. I will be patient and wait for your sample code - I guess you've got more important things (like the emulator) to be getting on with! Once I've got past the "hello world" stage, I'm planning on attempting a freeware remake of an 8-bit classic, something l...

Hi, Thanks for the info - interesting to know, and I didn't realise the CD-i players used different CPUs - I was under the assumption that all were 68070-based. Going back to a simple "hello world" program, would it be possible to: 1. Use the OS/API to initialise a screen mode (I don't know much abo...

CD-i marketing regions?

Hi,

We're all aware that the CD-i players and software titles were marketed throughout Europe and North America. But... where else (if anywhere) were CD-is actively sold?

Did any make it to Australia or New Zealand for instance (other than the ones I brought with me from the UK!)?

Regards,

I guess stuff like that will be easier once we all have access to the emulator! How difficult is the CD-i to program when doing something simple? For example, are all the applications/tools freely available to create a very simple CD-i disc that boots up and displays "Hello world" (without cheating ...

Another consideration is the type of Laser Module, if it has the reliable CDM9 then keep it as it would likely outlast the other inferior drives. ... with the caveat being that when it does eventually die, replacement CDM9s seem impossible to find whereas the 12.1s are commonplace - unless someone ...

Hi, Well, if you can get one cheaply with the title you're after then why not! However... There's less of a range of titles than for the other consoles, and depending on your local situation, you might find it harder to get GameCube titles than XBox/PS2 ones. And... most importantly, in the UK at le...
