Re: Dimo's Quest password recovery
Here are some comment from the sources of dimopass : Motivation and basic algorithm. The Dimo's Quest CD-i title issues level passwords after each completed level. By entering this password, the user can start directly at the next level. The list of passwords is different for each CD-i player, becau...

Dimo's Quest password recovery
It appears that the pressed Dimo's Quest does not have a cheat mode. From the Decoding CD-i audio files thread: .. no cheat mode .. Aww. Dimo is one of the best games out there, but with the randomly generated passwords it's only really playable with a fully working (no dead TimeKeeper) console. Lea...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
Froggy Dimo is in there. They did rework the sprite into a (what I call) red crocodile: http://www.shikotei.com/tmp/cdi/DimosQuest - gfxset1 - RedCroc.gif Do you know if this was actually used in the game? There's a different "red crocodile" monster in the gfxset (7 positions to the right of Dimo)....

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
... level map images for The Apprentice and Dimo's Quest ... I've had plans to do this for years and years, but just never got around to it... Very nice. Thank you! Thank you! One little detail I noticed: in the Dimo's Quest maps, you still have little frog Dimo: http://www.cdiemu.org/img/frog_dimo...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
Those CD-DA files were extracted years 'n years ago (early '00s) and have been extensively listened to (still are). Same here, my mp3 files for The Apprentice are dated September 2001 :) They are still on my phone, I listened to them all just last week (I actually have all the Vision Factory audio ...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
Next I will be taking a look at Dimo's Quest... Now that was really easy... Simply extracting all the .blk files, hexdumping them and using a few search patterns in vim quickly found all the sound effects in block 2 of the big.blk file in the RTF subdirectory of Dimo's Quest, using the exact same d...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
I couldn't help myself and wrote a little tool today: C:\Tmp>apprsfx Usage: apprsfx levelN.dat Function: Extracts The Apprentice sound effects from level data Raw sound effect data is written to effectN_M.raw Written by CD-i Fan <cdifan@gmail.com> It is based on reverse-engineering the code that mix...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
The sound parameters indicate that only half the filter and range parameters are set. The data samples are all ranging from 0x00 to 0x0F (using hex editor, so there's no mistaking it).. indicating that there really is no data in the other channel. Why? Why store a single channel in a stereo format?...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
Okay, I think you've almost got it so giving you actual code should not be considered cheating. Here's C++ source from CD-i Emulator for playing a 4-bit sound unit: /** Plays 4-bit sound unit. * * @param pChannel Audio channel. * @param bParam Sound parameter byte. * @param pbData Sound unit data. *...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
actually, decoding a single 18-byte soundgroup, of which there are 128 in a 2304-byte audio sector I think you mean "a single 128-byte soundgroup, of which there are 18 in a 2304-byte audio sector". Ye old switcharoo, but inconsistent data is not something I'd let go uncorrected. You are right of c...

Re: Decoding CD-i audio files
What you are describing above is helpful for understanding, but it's identical (except for the omission of Level A) to the CD-XA standards. Decoding for that audio format most certainly exists out there, see e.g. MESS, FFmpeg, and many other sources (I could provide sample code but it is already out...

Re: The Apprentice Regional Variations
There are no differences in the actual data bits between the EU and US versions.
The only difference is in the packaging and the mastering (leadin and leadout areas).
PS. I have both discs and checked this.
