***SPAM SUSPECTED***

Post by Bas » Fri Jan 19, 2007 5:39 pm

Hi there,
I'm sure you noticed the amount of spam the board gets lately, spam bots signing up and posting inappropiate topics. We from CDinteractive are very aware of this and we are looking for ways to prevent the spam! If you have any good option, ofcourse we'll warmly welcome you, but I'm sure within time the spam will be history!

Just install a captcha add-on. I'm sure there is one for phpBB.

I've installed a few MODS to deal with the SPAM accounts we already had. Over the weekend I'll exact a solution to stop any further SPAM. On a side note sorry to SHELL! I accidentally got all click happy and deleted your account. Just signup again and it'll be all smiles and kisses again!

Sorry about that all the same SHELL!

I'm sorry for the increasing spam *again* while I thought with the recent mods we got rid of it! However, we're not deleteing it right away to get an idea where the spam comes from so we can act properly. Within short time it will be over ;)

I wojnder why most or all of the spam concentrates on the General forum. It could be that this phrase is hardcoded into the bot as a place to enter spam and renaming the General forum into something not easily guessable would help.

worth a try ;) However, if these are human bots, it shouldn't make any difference, right?

I'm waiting for Devin's wizardry about the spam mods

I'd say your problem was defined a bit too narrowly... :-)

in regards to the spambots, I used to run a couple different phpbb forums in the past and through constant spambot attack did some digging and learned that there is a program called xrumer that is what spammers use to get past your security measures. I forget what it was called but we installed a plug in that was designed to trick xrumer into overlooking the forum. If I remember correctly it required us to create tags to prevent spiders from crawling and indexing the forum which meant we had to move the forum from the top domain to a subdomain that was not accessible from hyperlinks and then not allowing search spiders to index the site. The reason this worked was because the spambot basically work similar to googebot they crawl the web and look for forums to attack. People actually pay for the software too and it just shows how ignorant people can be.

The draw back was yeah less spam but also not being indexed in search engines. Unfortunately I gave up on the forum and the websites long before we could tell if it was working or not so I don't know if it was a good trade off.
