CD-i Console 220 - Blinking Error Message

So I bought a phillips cdi 220 off of ebay and it was supposed to be in working order, but when I place any cd into the disc tray they will not play. I have tried audio cds and many different cdi discs. I am having a problem with the tray. It opens slowly and when I close it it starts to close fine but stops about an inch before it should go in.

So I have to lightly force the tray closed (it tries on its own and makes quite a struggle and some noise). Once the disc is in the player it does nothing. I don't get any buttons to play the disc. If I push play nothing happens. So I turn off the player. Then wait a second or two and turn it back on. Then I receive a blinking ERROR message on the display of the player.

So my disc is not being read I guess? I don't hear any spinning of the disc. But it is hard to tell because I cannot take of the cover. Some of the screws are messed up so my allen wrench is useless.

Any ideas as to what I need to do? (I don't really know the components of the system very well so a good discription would be much appreciated.)

This is my first cdi and I have about 12 games. I would love to see what it can do. Any help would be great! Thanks. :D

'bummer! don't you hate it when you buy something from ebay and it appears to be not working! The CD tray stuck, that's something I hear more often. But when you're not able to remove the screws and look what's underneath it, what can you do? Maybe a little lubricant can solve the tray closing on its own, and does the tray look normal when it's open? No parts broken... It sounds very much the same as the door problem as described here: click

My try would be removing the screws, may it be with a little force. It's most easy when you remove the outside and look what's going on. Most probably there's a small piece stucking the tray from closing.

It seems like the tray can't get the disc on the spinning wheel, so it won't read anything. Sounds like a minor problem, but you have to get a look inside the player to solve it...

When you shake the player, do you hear loose parts? That indicates some problems ;)

Thanks for the advice. Everything was very helpful. I went to the hardware store and bought the correct kind of screwdriver so I could open it up and look around. Everything looked fine except that my cd wouldn't spin. So I looked on the forums and you guys had already addressed it. So I followed the proper steps and my cd had no problem spinning. So I have been checking out some various games and it has been quite enjoyable.

Thanks for all the help! Problem solved :)

The old take it apart, do nothing then put it back together trick works wonders with CD-i players!
