The CD-i can play burned games, although certain models are more picky than others.

No, I wasn't meaning the quality of the CDR or anything like that ... just certain models (like the more common 450) seem to have difficulty reading them on a regular basis.

Higher quality CD-R's will help to preserve your laser, not matter what model you're using. Low quality CD-R's might get you a lot of read errors, and the extra access time can add up and wear down the laser a lot faster compared to original or high quality discs. Which brand is considered high quality these days I'm not too sure about. It's been a while since I bought any CD-R's.

I have tried many backups on my recently-acquired 450 and I can attest to this. In contrast, with the same types of discs, my Neo Geo CD, 3DO and Sega CD have no problems whatsoever.

My 450 will read backups anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 the time. Its really more an exercise in patience, rebooting the CD-i over & over and hoping that the next time will be the one it reads. To a much smaller extent, the Goldstar model of 3DO has a slightly similar problem.
