"Any others I haven't mentioned"

that's a lot!

According to your numbers you also have a complete list?

There are also a lot of subtitled versions. By the way, even nowadays VCD's of every cinema movie are still pressed. To complete them all is a major task!

oh, i see you're looking only for philips vcd's?
Although, the one you list are not all from the philips label...

I'm pretty sure Mathias would like to talk to you.

He's compiling a list of all Philips CD-i software including an ambitious VCD section, check out the project at philipscdi.com. Bear in mind the Movie archive is lagging behind the other sections at the moment but if you like i'm sure Mathias would welcome your lists.

I do have a complete list of the US versions, which is mostly what I'm looking for. I have only been able to come up with 3/4 of that list in 2 years of collecting. I am not interested in the ones with subtitles. There are around 140 released stateside and the same with the UK but the UK and US release titles are pretty different.

Mine are PAL versions, UK mostly, so no subs. Let me know if there's anything you want.

Here is the Master List of Video Cd's released in the US from 1993-1996. I am not including children's titles or VCDs that don't have the Philips logo (i.e. documentaries like Icebound and movies like Cadillac Man and Force 10). Also concluded is the catalog numbers. The only number I couldn't find was Last of The Mohicans but I know it exists because I've seen it.

I'm interested in Young Guns, Princess Bride, and Bon Jovi but I want them shipped without the jewel cases (cd's and inserts only) so that I can drastically save on shipping to the States.

Princess Bride is 811 2102
Young Guns is 811 2105
Bon Jovi is 632 776-4 - this one is Polygram, not Philips on the cover (but at that time Philips owned Polygram)

If these are OK, let me know and I'll look into shipping costs w/o jewel cases.

Hello guys. Longtime lurker from America here. Love the forum and love the Interactive Dreams blog.

Anyway, I have been wondering which of these movies are in the VCD format and which are the older Digital Video format.

I assume the titles that are capitalized are the ones in the VCD format since the ones I own (Total Recall, First Blood, First Blood Part II, Basic Instinct) are all VCDs.

I like VCDs because they play in some DVD players.

Thanks for any info guys.

Hi Dirk! I always wondered if there would be a specific date when Philips stepped away from the Digital Video on Cd-i standard and started to publish their movies as true video cd's. It seems that the very first generation (starting with Top Gun) of CD-i movies was published as 'Digital Video on CD-i'. We've never completed a full list of these titles I'm afraid although we did make an attempt to collect all these. Here's what whe've ended with:

Black Rain
Fatal Attraction
Ghost
Patriot Games
Star Trek 6 - The undiscovered Country
The Hunt for Red October
The Naked Gun 2 1/2
Top Gun
Wayne's World

If anyone has a CD-i movie title which is also a 'digital video on cd-i' title, please share!

The other disc I have is "Posse" with Stephen Baldwin and Mario Van Peebles. It is from Polygram and as I recall, the date was 1994. It comes with a nice booklet.

The other movies I have that I mentioned before (Total Recall, "Rambo", etc) are dated 1995 and are all from Carolco/Live. These come with just a cover sleeve.

Both of these formats are really fascinating from a historical perspective, as they are an obvious link between the laserdisc and DVD eras.

If anyone had a DVD player capable of playing VCDs then these were a great alternative to watching these films on VHS. Although, pretty much all of these titles have been available on DVD for some time now, there are still some that aren't (like the Bryan Adams video collection).

I personally only remember seeing these for sale (in America) at a store called Incredible Universe, which was a gigantic warehouse size electronics store. Of course at the time, I didn't have much of an interest since there was relatively very little advertising (if any) for the video formats or for CD-i at all.

If I recall, the Cd-i VCD/Digital video movies were not stocked with the CD-i games but rather near the audio CDs and Laserdiscs.

I wish Philips had made a bigger promotional splash with these, and at an earlier date. I'm not sure at exactly what date these started to roll out at, but there should have been a big push right from the start in 91 or 92.

The problems this format had just echo the problems Cd-i had in general, at least in America.

CD-i WAS TWO YEARS TOO LATE.

Cd-i was meant for the late 80s. In 88/89 only Honest to God geeks had a PC. Most people didn't have a CD player, and many people didn't have a VCR. Sega Genesis was released in August 89, and Super Nintendo was two years away.

Also, the movies weren't in widescreen so it didn't compete for the geek dollars against Laserdisc.

However, I dearly love this format, and CD-i in general for what it wanted desperately to be. Much like the Sony PSP and it's UMD format years later, it was trying to be the one electronic appliance that did all the most important things that all the other devices did, at a price people could afford.

With Cd-i, I could travel to Mars with Arnold Schwarzenegger, save Don Bluth's beautiful princess in Dragon's Lair, or rock out with Bryan Adams.

The list of movies released as 'CD-i DV' titles in the U.S. is different. Of the 16 full-length movies mentioned in a list of released CD-i titles through June, 1994 as compiled by the Developer Services group at Philips Interactive Media of America (archived at http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp. ... cdicat.txt), I believe that 13 were 'CD-i DV' titles, a.k.a. 'Digital Video on CD-i'. Here are those 13, along with the approximate date of authoring according to the timestamps of the files on disc for those titles I have in hand:

Black Rain (9/93)
Coneheads
The Firm (12/93)
The Hunt For Red October (9/93)
Indecent Proposal
The Naked Gun 2 1/2 (9/93)
Patriot Games (9/93)
Posse
Sliver
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (9/93)
Top Gun (9/93)
Wayne's World (2/94)
White Christmas (9/93)

For the four U.S. titles above that I don't have, I was able to find an image of the sleeve or booklet on eBay or elsewhere that clearly shows the 'Digital Video' designation and not that of 'Video CD'.

The three U.S. titles released as of June, 1994 that were apparently Video CDs and not CDi-i DV titles were:

Addams Family Values
Goldfinger (5/94)
Wayne's World 2

Therefore the switch from CD-i DV to Video CD was made between February and May of 1994, sometime between the authoring of "Wayne's World" and "Goldfinger". (If anyone can supply dates for the titles above I don't have, we might be able to narrow this down further.)

Fitting right in with that evidence is a document entitled "What is Video CD?", dated April 6, 1994 (presuming U.S. date formatting), in which Andrew Davidson and Lucy Lediaev of Philips Interactive Media of America describe the benefits of publishing video titles in the Video CD format over VHS and even over CD-i DV. That document is archived at http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ftp. ... videoc.txt.

So what about "Fatal Attraction" and "Ghost", which were released as CD-i DV titles in Europe? Apparently neither title was released in the U.S. prior to the changeover from CD-i DV to Video CD. I have a copy of a U.S. release of Fatal Attraction dated 10/95, and it's a Video CD title. I've never been able to find a copy of the U.S. release of "Ghost", but given that it's not mentioned in the list of releases as of June, 1994, I'm comfortable supposing that it was a later arrival in the U.S. as well.

In closing I have a question of my own: The CD-i FAQ states that of the "20 or so movies" published as CD-i DV titles, "most were re-released in Video-CD format some time later." Does anyone have multiple versions of any of these titles, one a CD-i DV title and one a Video CD, for the same region? For example, obviously "Fatal Attraction" was released as a PAL CD-i DV title in Europe and as an NTSC Video CD in the U.S., but was it also re-released as a Video CD in Europe with the Philips label in mid-1994 or later, supporting the claim in the FAQ regarding re-releases of the early titles?
