CDi is a crap system. Why the fuss?

The CDi was a console which lasted two seconds because of its awfulness and features poor excuses for Zelda games as well as lots of other tripe. Ask most people and they'll agree with me.

Before you ask me why I'm here, I'm simply a Zelda completionist.

The CDi is crap. Why are you so excited about the Emulator?

Also, WTF is the point of an emulator when you need the actual console to play it? Surely the whole point of an emulator is to avoid buying the console.

(I by no means use emulators instead of getting still-selling and DECENT consoles, e.g. the Gamecube which pwns the CDi completely.

I'm thinking of getting the emulator for the Zelda games, but I'll find the roms etc from the internet. Isn't it a bit pointless to buy a cable AND an emulator if you already have the console and could play it on a TV, which is more fun than on a computer?

Of course the GameCube is better!!

That's like comparing a BBC computer to an AMD Athlon 800MHZ computer running Windows 98, simply a leap in technology. I guess we all have different reasons why we have the Philips CD-i as a hobbie project and the emulator is an extension of this very fascination. We could do the whole "chicken and egg" argument about why we want an emulator if we already own the CD-i player in the first place but the bottom line is that this technology will die whilst software has a longevity no hardware can offer, not even the GameCube.

My own personal fascination started from the lack of comprehensive media resources associated with CD-i on the net and all the terrific untold stories from the system. A sample of which can be found on Black Moons articles section here. I'd be interested to know what everybody elses view is on the subject and in case you were wondering I voted for GameCube...I love Resident Evil 4 soooo much

i really think if the cd-i didn't have its Nintendo licensed products, it would have been disappeared by now in no-existing.

CD-i is a remarkable system, that's for sure. The fact it's a multimedia machine instead of a games console tells you enough.

CD-i doesn't have great games, true. It's still a fascinating system nonetheless.

It's the history i'm very interested in. I never play games on my cd-i anymore...

As Bas already said, CD-i was never intended as a console (i.e., game) system. That the system could do fairly decent games, at least for the time, was probably a surprise to the designers too. Of course, the Digital Video cartridge had a lot to do with this, too.

Remember that CD-i is a late eighties design; at the times PC hardware wasn't much better!

fuss ?? CD-I when it got released was way away of its time back then and imho but people wasent ready for that kinda stuff at that time and one of the reasons it didnt got the deserved succes ....

with that being said i really think its unfair to compare a old generation consule with a highend consule ...

emulation isnt about "piracy" but about "nostagic" bad spelling

and imho i think all ZELDA`S games sucks a..

@Devin: the BBC computer is far better than a Win98 PC! Anything that doesn't go "burr-beep" when switched on just isn't worth using!

@Octorok: many systems of the late eighties and early nineties are "crap" when compared to modern PCs and game consoles. The point of an emulator is to preserve the experience of using that old hardware and its software, which will almost certainly fail at some point, as Devin pointed out.

I own a number of old computers and have emulators for all of them. For the really old stuff, I'll use emulation exclusively (as it's often too much hassle to dig out the old hardware) but for newer things (e.g. Amiga and CD-i), I'll use the real thing. Besides, the CD-i is still a competent VCD player!

and besides for me at least "emulation" is not only about bringin back a consule/computer/arcade to life but as well brining the good old memories back as well ... and thats what emulation are about and not to sit and just think omg its not doom 3 grapichs retro fans dosent care about that kinda stuff.

many of the younger generationsi i talks with and i mention forexample the C64 computer they say yuk it have bad grapichs and bad sounds and afcouse it have "compared" to the highend consules/computers where grapichs have to be better than gameplay but back then it was about gameplay

C64 the longest surviving computer ever!!!!!! Theirs still new software and hardware comming out for it in the 21st century.

1 of them poor excuses for Zelda games you talk about is one of the most expensive Zelda games you can find on ebay.

I'm not a graphics whore like you think. The NES and SNES roxored, since they had tons of amazing games. The CDi, however...

That's because it is so rare. Why? Because no one bought it, so they didn't produce that many copies.

If you even start to compare Zelda's adventure to LttP or OOT, I will kill you.

I know I haven't played it, but from the amount of reviewers and fans who agree on its crapness, I am 95% sure that ZA is worse than LttP and OOT.

i never owned a SNES or NES tryed some games ok consule not anything by it there made it superiour to the amiga at the same time in gameplay ... I had a N64 thought bought Zelda there and got rid of it 2 days after didnt like it at all
but got the consule mostly becouse of : Ogre Battle 64, GoldenEye, turok...

but if we shall compare SNES how many titles 2500+?? afcouse there are some games there are bound to be a classic .....

you sound like the younger generation there didnt was there from the begining and saw to amazing things in the early 80`s

if i should point a few titles NONE other consules or computers did as good as the CD-I i know of are "7th guest" , "littel Devil" none other did those better prolly more but those 2 i owned back then so i know them well ..

there are other consules there didnt do well even it was great ones like Cd32 it was a great consule as well sadly many of the games there came was plain disk games from the normal amiga so a CD for a 800k game

i still think if you are so much against the CD-I i wonder why you are here you mostly find people there there are really happy about the project ...

Not forgetting the Laser Disc games like Dragon's lair, Mad Dog McCree which the CD-i had the best affordable version of at the time unless you had a few grand cash to spend on the laser system itself!!

The CDI however was an interactive entertainment system and not just a dedicated games console like the Nes and Snes.

Comparing old computers to new computers is like saying Modern Fighter Plane is much faster than a Spitfire. Technology has improved everyone knows that. It doesnt mean the old stuff is crap.

Incidently Zelda Adventure recently went for £90 and Link the faces of evil went for £51 on ebay.

Personally I always prefered Team 17s Speris Legacy to the Zelda games

This has got to be one of the funniest comparsions i have EVER seen ANYONE ever make. Gamecube compared to CDI....ermmmm lemme think......ooh i know.....ill choose the Gamecube because it ROXORS. LOL what a joke. Firstly Gamecube cannot ever be compared to the cdi as well as you cannot compare a cdi to a nes. It would appear painfally apparent that this person has probably never even played a cdi in the year that it was actually produced! As for why bother making a cdi emulator...WTF?? in that case, why would anyone want to make a nes,snes,n64,ps,amiga,atari st, atari, gameboy, gba etc etc emulator...i mean they are all crap compared to the xbox eh? Personally i admire the creators of this emulator and wish them every luck with it - those commenting should really consider one thing...how much have you contributed to the emulator scene and not how good or bad a system was. Hell.... perhaps if you had a brain you could create an xbox emu LOL. Remember this....in 5 years time your xbox will be in the local skip like everyone elses. Keep up the good work coders wishing you all the best.
