[splitted] Peacekeeper Revolver

Anything relating to CD-i can be discussed in this forum. From the multiple hardware iterations of the system to the sofware including games, reference, music and Video CDs. Maybe you hold an interest in Philips Media and the many development houses set up to cater for CD-i if so then this is the forum.

Hand me my welding torch

What have you done with my Peacekeeper Revolver anyway Terratron? Is it obliterated into a thousand different pieces for research purposes

Interesting... what is inside that revolver?

I've never seen one; does it in some way connect to the video output of the player as well?

If not, calibration would be... well... interesting; you'd have to do pixel-accurate timing inside the CD-i player

to change that with another lightgun? You DID realize the Peacekeeper is unique in its kind and you cannot replace that with say, a ZAPPER kind of gun!!

No, I was referring to what the software inside the CD-i player has to do.

If I remember correctly, the peacekeeper only worked with a few selected titles, right? Or could it be used with any CD-i title? Could you control the player shell with it?

Yeah, you could control the shell and everything. you could use it with every cd-i title. It just shows a cursor on screen. There was a IR sensor you'd have to place on top of the TV, and the Peacekeeper responds with the IR sensor only.

It's just a 'normal' controller, but with a very unique technique inside.

Something like the new Revolution controller Nintendo will use!

Hmm, you know it's been sometime since I tried it but I think you actually could!!

The Peacekeeper Revolver was often referred to as an "Air Mouse", the inference being that you waved it around in the air instead of the humble landed mouse we all know and love.

Ahh okay; I was thinking more along the lines of a "light pen" which actually reacts to the beam from the TV or monitor sweeping alongside it.

I think "air mouse" is incorrect, however; a mouse generates relative movements, the gun probably did absolute ones.

Very nice info. Thanks, Bas!

Anybody know how this works? Must be some combination of direction/distance/angle measurement, probably using infrared or ultrasonic. This could be done by sending different coded beams in different directions or something...

(I splitted the topic because the other one was losing focus)

that last pic says it can only be used with specific titles developed for use with the gun. Hmmm... I take it does work with all titles, but when no calibration is available the cursor movement may turn out to be cumbersome...

anyone else?

The gun works with all titles, the calibration routines are only included with certain titles. The gun does not work like a normal lightgun, e.g. by timing the electronbeam from the TV-screen. The CD-i lightgun works with an IR-sender in the small box and a directional IR-receiver in the gun itself. From the angle and intensity of the received IR it is calculated where the gun is pointing at. I think it's also explained in that document about cd-i pointing devices, I'm sur I've seen some document where it's explained in detail. So instead of a more standard lightgun, a CD-i lightgun will also work with LCD TV's and beamers. IIRC the lightguns were pretty expensive at the time, more than twice the price of a similar gun for another system.

I never modified it myself, but I do have pictures of how the revolver looks on the inside. This may uncover a little how the gun works....

You'll read it all tomorrow, Saturday May 26, in Interactive Dreams

Ahh will have a look now. Might be an interesting learning experience trying to mod the case for one, maybe say one based on the gun in Escape From Cyber City/Galaxy Express 999 or have a sci-fi ish one for Burn Cycle .. maybe someone would like to take up those as a hobby/challenge ?
